MAHESHAMURTHY OR SADASHIVA ( The Eternal Shiva ) in the Main Cave at Gharapuri ( Elephanta Caves).
The Generator, "VAMADEVA" Or "UMA" a beautiful face very feminine, signifying Birth or Creation. (Right)
Represents : Chitta Rupini.
The Operator, "TATPURUSHA" the Preserver, a serene and calm face with magnetic, attraction with sensuous lips. ( Centre)
Represents : Ananda Shakthi.
The Destroyer," AGHORA MURTHY" or "BHAIRAVA". The destroyer of Death, Time and Evil, "KALASAMHARA". Dipped Brows, shrunk forehead,blown nose, spread mouth, twirled moustache, with serpents and skull represent the symbol of death.
Represents : Jnana Shakthi.
The fourth invisible face ( perceived) of "NANDIN" or "SADYOJATA".
Represents : Ichcha Shakthi.
This four headed( one on the back - not visible) image of Mahadev in all the aspects of creation & destruction, majestically standing at about 6.1 meters or 20 feet is a an art of monolithic nature. It is a masterpiece and the main attraction of the Elephanta caves.The Images of Sadashiva with his closed eye lids and in deep meditational pose, works wonders in the people present in the grand hall. The different aspects of Shiva are etched in an apt role befitting feature & profile.
