Singapore Defends Indian-Origin Malaysian Drug Trafficker

Singapore has defended its judgement on death sentence of an Indian-origin Malaysian drug trafficker at highest level with both prime minister and foreign minister writing to their Malaysian counterparts, pointing out that convict has been accorded due process under law of city state.

As per the authority Malaysian news organization Bernama, Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had purportedly kept in touch with his Singaporean partner Lee looking for mercy in the case."Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan have answered to their Malaysian partners to pass on that Nagaenthran A/L K Dharmalingam has been concurred full fair treatment under the law," a MFA representative said because of media questions on Friday.

Nagaenthran was condemned to death in 2010 for bringing in 42.7 grams of unadulterated heroin into Singapore in 2009 in a pack tied to his thigh, and has since been waiting for capital punishment. He was 21-year-old at the hour of capture. Protection legal counselor M Ravi recorded a court application on November 8 this year expressing that Nagaenthran has the psychological time of somebody under 18. He contended that legal leniency ought to be practiced to allow Nagaenthran a relief from the execution of capital punishment, awaiting additional mental assessments and reports on his psychological state.
