Punjab govt to vaccinate students going abroad on priority: CM

The government of Punjab will be providing priority vaccinations for students who have plans to study abroad for this academic year. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has recently announced that the state government will be conducting a vaccination drive on priority for students who are planning to study abroad for the academic year 2021-22 and have to report to their universities.

During a Covid-19 review meeting, CM Amarinder Singh announced that certain groups including students seeking to go abroad, caregivers of elderly persons and other priority groups need to be vaccinated as soon as possible in the state.

The announcement was made through Punjab Chief Minister’s Office’s official Twitter account, which said, “Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh announced that students wanting to go abroad for studies from Punjab will now be prioritised in the vaccination process for the 18-45 group.”

According to reports, the government of Punjab has vaccinated over 4.3 lakh people falling in the priority category till now. The priority category earlier consisted of construction labours, co-morbid individuals and families of healthcare workers.

Vaccination drive for study abroad students

Last month, the government of Maharashtra had announced that they were conducting a vaccination drive with the utmost priority for students who have gotten admission into international universities this year.

The vaccination drive was conducted by BMC in Mumbai, with three hospitals as centres. Students had to carry documents as proof of their admission to the centre if they wanted to get vaccinated under this category.

Once the vaccination drive had started, several students complained about the inefficiency of the system put in place at the vaccination centres by BMC. Students complained that they had to wait for hours, and some of them had to return home without getting vaccinated.

The BMC later announced that they will be procuring more vaccine doses for the students who are planning to study abroad this year.

Several state governments and academicians have been urging the central government to provide vaccinations for students who were set to appear for the Class 12 board exams, but the board exams stand cancelled now in most states.
